The General Contractors Association, a one hundred year old organization, with only one renovation during that time decided in 2001 that it was time for change. CONANT ARCHITECTS solution was simple, get back to the basics of construction.
Existing ceilings were removed, beams exposed, doors stripped to their natural metal finishes and revitalization of the hopper style clerestories were just the beginning of this renovation. Lighting fixtures reminiscent of a by-gone era complimented the original structure and archival images of early construction projects form the last century of building in New York make the experience work as a whole.
A 16” square original subway railroad tie salvaged form the 9/11 site is the centerpiece of the new reception desk and a tribute to the importance of the construction industries role in the making and rebuilding of New York.
