Since 1908, New Yorkers have been glancing over the Hudson River to catch a view of the historic Colgate Clock. Originally installed on the Jersey City side of Manhattan’s western waterway atop Colgate’s manufacturing facilities, the clock has since moved front and center to the fast growing mixed use and waterfront business district opposite lower Manhattan.

As part of a full site redevelopment by the new land owners, the Colgate-Palmolive Company retained rights to proudly display the Clock structure well into the future. With the existing clock works in service for over 80 years, more than just routine maintenance was required to preserve this icon.

To carry the Colgate Clock into its next century, the proposed CONANT ARCHITECTS design mimics the major design elements for which the clock is well known, while adding an underlying level of refinement which will stand the test of time. The original 55’ diameter face, octagonal bezel, hour and minutes markers, and hour and minute hands all take the same form as the original. However a new tubular stainless steel support structure allows the clock to gracefully stand above the Jersey City Ferry Terminal Piers. A higher level of precision is achieved with new mechanical clock works which are synchronized to the U.S. Atomic Clock and the weather sealed for minimal variations due to thermal conditions. Lighting elements are recreated in long life LED’s to simultaneously conserve power and reduce maintenance.
